Review: Deadtown by Nancy Holzner

Deadtown (Deadtown, #1)

Synopsis:

They call it Deadtown: the city’s quarantined section for its inhuman and undead residents. Most humans stay far from its borders — but Victory Vaughn, Boston’s only professional demon slayer, isn’t exactly human…

Vicky’s demanding job keeping the city safe from all manner of monsters is one reason her relationship with workaholic lawyer (and werewolf) Alexander Kane is in constant limbo. Throw in a foolhardy zombie apprentice, a mysterious demon-plagued client, and a suspicious research facility that’s taken an unwelcome interest in her family, and Vicky’s love life has as much of a pulse as Deadtown’s citizens.

But now Vicky’s got bigger things to worry about. The Hellion who murdered her father ten years ago has somehow broken through Boston’s magical protections. The Hellion is a ruthless force of destruction with a personal grudge against Vicky, and she’s the only one who can stop the demon before it destroys the city and everyone in it.

Look out Boston, there's a new sheriff in town. Ok, not exactly a sheriff but how about a Demon Slayer? A demon slayer straight out of the heart of Deadtown, the designated zone for all those "not human", including but not limited to zombies (or how about the politcally correct version- the Previously Deceased), Vampires, and shapeshifters. Massachussetts is in the middle of a political upheaval in which politicians are fighting for or against the rights of those "Not Human" and all the while a demon, more specifically a Hellion, has been unleashed. From demons, to questionable business men, to werewolves, to vampires, to witches, to experimentations on the unhumans, and kidnappings... pure excitement is packed in to the 326 pages that is "Deadtown"

I found "Deadtown" to be a fast read with exciting, witty characters, a great plot and with plenty of action. Holzner has created a heroine worthy of fans. For fans of Urban Fantasy, "Deadtown" will gladly fulfill your taste buds for the genre. I, for one, can't wait until the sequel comes out. I want to know what's in store for Vicky, Alexander Kane (her werewolf/civil rights lawyer) and Tina, the zombie. Frankly, I need more of "Deadtown".

Reviewer's Block

I have 5, yes FIVE book reviews to write. I have read and FINISHED these books but can not seem to find the words needed to write the reviews. I think it's because the books are mediocre. They weren't bad nor were they great. They were just ok. Not all 5 of them, 3 were fantastic but I think the fact that the other 2 books were just simply ok doesn't motivate me to write much. Ahh, oh well, be on the lookout this week for new book reviews. 3 AWESOME urban fantasies and two not so great books.

Also, I am working on a diet for my daughter that has me completely overwhelmed. I was reading about SCD (Specific Carb Diet) which is great for digestive issues and those with Autism. Although my daughter doesn't have Autism, she does have a sensory processing disorder and a left sided cerebral palsy. It's either SCD or GF/CF (Gluten Free/Casein Free). My daughter has chronic constipation which, frankly, scares me due to all that bacteria just sitting in her body. We do Miralax but I need to find a diet that is easier for her to process so she won't need to rely on Miralax. I hope I can get something balanced in her digestive system and having a healthy gut means a healthy person. :)

Review: Fugitive by Cheryl Brooks

Fugitive: The Cat Star Chronicles #5

When a Zetithian fugitive meets a beautiful Earth woman, their passion may cost them both their lives…

Manx is a Zetithian fugitive with a feline gene that gives him remarkable sexual powers. He has been in hiding in the remote jungles of Barada Seven ever since being marked for extermination by the violent Nedwuts.

Artist Drusilla arrives on Barada Seven, enticed only by the promise of finding a nature paradise there. But she discovers a wildlife she wasn't expecting when she encounters Manx. Reckless with desire for the beautiful Earth woman, Manx risks his life to win her as his mate.

It's only a matter of time until the Nedwuts find them, but it will take all of Manx and Drusilla's passion, skill, and ingenuity to survive.

Uh oh. Not good. This is going to be a "Did Not Finish" review. I found the idea behind the story awesome. I love off-world paranormal romances and was really, really excited for the opportunity to read "Fugitive" by Cheryl Brooks which is her latest installment of her popular "Cat Star Chronicles" series. This is the first time I read anything by this author, so I was pretty excited.

I am sure you are wondering why I did not finish this book. Very simple. The prologue ruined the entire book for me, enough so that I couldn't get in to it enough to put self through the hours I would need to read this. The issue I had is that Manx, the male hero, is outside somewhere near Drusilla's temporary home and is masterbating to her "scent" while he "knows" that she knows he is watching her. He doesn't even know the color of her eyes YET he "knows" they WILL become mates. I just couldn't get over that. All I could think of was those perverts in city parks masterbating in the bushes while people walk by, or the pervs who stalk outside women's homes masterbating while they watch.

I have to say, I feel like I am a prude about sex or something. I am not. I have no issues with it in books, tv, movies, music etc. I have an issue when it's distracting. This was distracting so much to the point I had no desire to read further then 50 pages in. I thought Manx was creepy just from this initial part of the book.

I don't want anybody to be deterred from this book. I am sure it's a good book but for myself personally, it was ruined right off the bat. I am not putting any kind of rating associated with this book as it would not be fair as I was unable to finish it.

disclaimer: This book was provided to me at no cost by the publisher, Sourcebooks. I am not provided with any monetary compensation for my review. My reviews are unbiased and to be shared with other book lovers. I am just a book lover who reviews books as a hobby. I have no desire to become a professional reviewer nor do I want to be paid for reviewing. I just love good books and prefer to keep it that way!

Waaaaaahhhhh!!!

Ok, I know when you change your layout you lose allll your wonderful widgets. Well, I had saved ALL my codes so I can copy and paste them back in, well, the program shut down and I want to sit like a baby and cry! Sooo... bear with me as I attempt to rebuild my page. I was just playing around with layouts and wasn't sure if I would keep this one, but looks like I am... for now :) What do you think of it?
