This Indonesian-Style Sweet & Sour Pork sandwich is absolutely amazing. This is such a simple but the flavors are absolutely insane! It's like a banh mi but... different.
I recently discovered the magic of kecap manis. In short, kecap manis is a sweet soy sauce and is extremely popular in Indonesia. I found bottles of it at a local International market and it sounded interesting and here we are today. Of course, many Google searches later- I feel like a kecap manis connoisseur (I kid!). I had no freaking clue what do with it other than make an Indonesian fried rice.
I came across a recipe on ImportFood.com that I had to make and this sweet and sour pork sandwich had to happen!
Indonesian-Style Sweet & Sour Pork Sandwich Recipe
(printable version)
1.5 lbs ground pork
2 tsp Chinese Five Spice powder
2 tbsp Kecap Manis
2 tbsp White vinegar
Cilantro
Carrots, julienned
Cucumbers, julienned
Radishes, julienned
French bread/baguette
1. Heat skillet to medium, add pork and five spice.
2. Cook until browned and done.
3. Add vinegar & kecap manis.
4. Cook another minute.
5. Slice bread down the middle- add carrots, cucumbers, and radishes. Add pork mixture and then top with cilantro.
6. Top with sriracha for extra oomph & spice!
Enjoy!
*Note- if you can not find kecap manis at your local store and you don't want to wait for an Amazon delivery, you can make your own. A great recipe is on Food52 and you can find it here.
